We recently attempted to purchase a property through Bartons and have been left seriously concerned by how the competing-offer process was handled.
After discovering through our own estate agent that another offer had overtaken ours, we revised our position. Bartons specifically told us they would give the competing buyer an opportunity to respond. However, when their position subsequently improved, we were not afforded the same opportunity before being told the seller had chosen them.
We fully accept that the seller ultimately chooses their buyer. Our concern is simply why one prospective buyer appears to have been given an opportunity that wasn't equally extended to us.
Following our formal complaint, Bartons Managing Director responded promptly and instructed the negotiator to go back to the seller and ask whether both buyers should now be invited to submit best offers.
What makes this even more confusing is that the property has subsequently been marked SOLD STC on property platforms including Rightmove, and a SOLD board has already been erected at the property, while we are simultaneously being told Bartons is going back to the seller about potentially allowing both parties to submit best offers.
My advice to anyone buying through Bartons is to keep everything in writing and ask clearly how competing offers are being handled. If I were selling through Bartons, I would also want to understand exactly how prospective buyers and competing offers were being managed on my behalf.
The matter is now under formal investigation. I will update this review when Bartons provides its findings and will fairly reflect any explanation or resolution.

Bartons have managed my rental property for years. They have now sold it. I have been very impressed with their professionalism and friendliness. We recently used Barton’s for our sale and purchase of our new bungalow. The staff are very professional, approachable and very friendly.
In particular Harriett and Laura made our whole experience a pleasurable one. Having been in the same property for 38yrs as you can imagine it was daunting, I needn’t have worried as they took care of everything but keeping us well informed of any progress and changes.
