In the foothills of the Pennines you can find Rochdale, a former mill town in Great Manchester. During the 19th Century Rochdale was the main town for textiles manufacturing, predominantly cotton. Its history dates back to the Domesday Book, where it is described as Recedham. Rochdale as a town was incorporated as a municipal borough in 1856 and today is largely a residential town with a spectacular town hall which is a Grade One listed building. The town has a population of around 96,000, but the population of the whole borough of Rochdale is fast approaching 207,000.
